The kid who carries a club

The kid who carries a club

Nova Selin is 18 years old and she has no business being this important already. But here we are. Against Malmö FF in the Damallsvenskan, Selin scored twice to rescue a point for AIK's women, and Saga Fredriksson put it bluntly: "She carries AIK in a way you cannot expect from an 18-year-old" (1). That is the kind of praise that lands heavy. It is also the kind of reliance that should worry anyone who cares about the women's team long-term.

The match itself was overshadowed by a deeply troubling moment. Centre-back Matilda Plan was carried off on a stretcher after a collision with Malmö's Kanutte (2) (12). Her condition remains unknown. AIK earned a point but it felt like an afterthought. A teenage forward dragging her team forward, a starting defender stretchered off. That was the week on the women's side: equal parts inspiration and dread.

Men's team: stuck in the mud

AIK 1–1 Sirius. Áron Csongvai produced a moment of genuine quality, a stunning free-kick to salvage a point (7) (10). But that one flash of brilliance cannot mask the bigger picture. AIK have now gone five league matches without a win. They sit 11th in a 16-team league with nine points and a negative goal difference. This is not a wobble. This is a trend.

José Riveiro is dealing with illness in the squad ahead of the derby against Hammarby (3). Key players have missed training. The timing could hardly be worse.

And then there is the Yohanna situation. AIK have blocked the player from joining Nigeria's national team, a move that speaks to how vital she is considered internally (12) (14). It is also a move that will raise questions. Clubs blocking international call-ups is never a clean story.

Transfers and whispers

Tim Theocharidis is back. The defender has signed with AIK, a return that adds depth to a squad that needs it (6). Meanwhile, Erik Ring, whose Lincoln City just won promotion to the Championship in England, has hinted at a possible return home: "If that comes up, it's absolutely relevant" (9). That is the kind of noise that keeps the rumour mill spinning. Whether there is substance behind it is another matter.

What next

The derby against Hammarby is now hours away. Nahir Besara, Hammarby's talisman, has declared himself ready to play "without legs" if necessary (10). Illness and form stack the odds against AIK. But derbies have their own logic. A win changes the entire temperature around this men's side. A loss, and the questions around Riveiro's project grow louder. Meanwhile, eyes remain on Matilda Plan and whether the women's team must navigate the coming weeks without a defensive leader. This is a club stretched thin across two fronts. Something has to give.
