One goal, and Apollon had nothing to show for it
Panionios 1–0 Apollon Kalamaria. A single goal decided it, and it was a good one, Tavares beating six players on the way to it (2) (4). Second defeat of the young season, and the manner matters more than the margin: Apollon did not lose a shootout, it lost a game it never got level in. Giannis Tatsis was blunt afterwards. "We deserved a goal," he said, and then the bigger line, that this is "the most difficult situation" of his career (8).
A squad that cannot buy a goal right now
Two matches, and the attacking output is the story. One moment from Tavares settled a game Apollon had the ball in for long spells (2) (4). Tatsis's post-match read is the same thing in a different register: his team created enough to score and did not (8). That is not a bad night, it is a pattern forming in the first weeks of the season, and it is the kind of pattern that decides whether a campaign is about the top half or about survival.
Tatsis is already carrying the weight
It is rare for a manager to say out loud in September that this is the hardest job he has had. Tatsis said it (8), and he did not dress it up. Read that as a manager who knows the squad is short, not as a manager angling for sympathy. He also thanked the Pontic supporters who travelled to be there (8). When a coach thanks the away end after a defeat, he is telling you where he thinks the energy has to come from.
What to watch
Asteras Aktor B' away on Sunday at 17:00 at the Th. Kolokotronis ground, third matchday (1) (5). Apollon have one goal in two games heading into it, and a result there stops the week from turning into something worse before October. Watch whether Tatsis changes the shape up front, or runs the same eleven out and asks them to be sharper in the box.
