Mitsotakis at the stand: the week Apollon went national
Saturday morning, the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, and the Prime Minister does his tour of the stands. He stops at the Apollon Kalamaria pavilion and the president makes his move. He asks Kyriakos Mitsotakis for one thing: a wish, a blessing, to take the club back to the salons of Greek football (1). Mitsotakis gives it. "You made us a first-foot and we went up a division," he says, and closes with the line that now travels on every Apollon phone: "Come on, with good luck, to the Super League" (2).
That is not a photo op. That is the president of a club using the biggest political stage of the year in Greece to set a stated target in public. You do not ask for that wish in front of cameras unless you expect to be held to it.
The transfer that fits the rhetoric
The wish needs a striker, and Apollon answered within a day. The club announced the signing of 31-year-old forward Kaprof, a move a-sports.gr calls a sensation (3). Age 31 is not a long-term project. It is a signing for now, for a promotion push, for a dressing room that wants a veteran who has done it before. The timing is not a coincidence. One day the president talks Super League in front of the Prime Minister, the next the club adds a proven No. 9.
That is what serious clubs do when the target is public. They back the words with names.
What to watch
The Super League is now the stated ambition, and nobody in Kalamaria gets to pretend otherwise after Saturday. Kaprof will be the first thing to monitor in training this week: how quickly a 31-year-old settles, and whether the coach lines him up as the lone striker or pairs him. If Mitsotakis's wish becomes a club slogan, the next fixture is the first place to hear it sung.
