The O'Neill resolution settles one crisis, exposes another
The managerial question that has hung over Celtic all summer finally has an answer. Martin O'Neill has agreed terms to take the job permanently (3) (6) (7) (9) (12). The deal ends a saga that lurched awkwardly toward Robbie Keane before fan groups intervened with a coordinated statement of opposition (13) (15). The Keane candidacy was always going to be combustible given his history with Maccabi Tel Aviv, and the supporter backlash left the board with no political cover. So O'Neill it is.
Pragmatism won. Whether that translates into authority in the transfer market is the real test now. Pundits warned repeatedly that the lack of a permanent manager was making signings difficult. That hurdle is cleared. What remains is a squad shedding key pieces.
Hatate and Nygren: the midfield core wants out
Reo Hatate has told Celtic he wants to leave this summer (2). The club is already planning for life without him, with Ajax's Benjamin Tahirovic identified as the replacement (6). You do not lose a player of Hatate's quality quietly. His ability to dictate tempo and break lines has been central to Celtic's structure for years.

Benjamin Nygren is also eyeing the exit. His quote, "We'll see what happens" (8), is the sound of a player keeping his options open while Valencia and Nottingham Forest circle. A front office that cannot offer clarity on who the manager will be has now lost that excuse. O'Neill's first job is a retention meeting that may already be too late.
Then there is Michel-Ange Balikwisha. O'Neill has essentially told him to hope the next manager fancies him, because this one does not (10) (11). A loan exit is the most dignified outcome available.
Targets emerging, but competition is stiff
Celtic's interest in Tairyk Arconte is real and specific. Fourteen goals in Ligue 2 for Rodez tells you he can finish (11) (13). The problem is Millwall and AJ Auxerre are in the same conversation, and Celtic are not the only club who can offer first-team football and a platform (1).
Milan Vitalis strengthened his case with a commanding display for Hungary in a 2–1 win over Finland on Friday (4) (5). The Gyor midfielder has been on the radar for a while, and his international performance showcased the kind of progressive carrying and defensive bite Celtic lacked in transition last season.
Defensively, Zinedin Smajlović of Sandefjord is a name to file (12). Feyenoord and Toulouse are also watching, which tells you the scouting community sees value. Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, on loan at Celtic last season, is now Köln's top priority (7). That ship may have sailed.
What to watch
O'Neill's permanent status removes the biggest variable. The next seven days need to deliver concrete movement, contracts signed, not just talks held. Arconte is the one to track. If Celtic let him go to Millwall, it raises uncomfortable questions about ambition. The Hatate-Nygren situation will not resolve quietly either. This week gave Celtic clarity. Next week has to deliver action.
