Barco signs seven-year deal as Chelsea's summer overhaul hits eight signings

Barco signs from Strasbourg on a seven-year deal

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Argentina international Valentín Barco from sister club Strasbourg. Seven years, a statement of intent from Xabi Alonso (1) (6) (11) (12). Barco becomes the eighth arrival of Alonso's reign and the latest piece in a squad overhaul that now totals close to €400m in spending (7). The 22-year-old left-back was memorably involved in a clash with Jude Bellingham at the 2026 World Cup (13).

Welbeck joins for £5m, and the youth policy is officially over

Danny Welbeck is a Chelsea player. Two years, £5m from Brighton (3). Yes, you read that right. The club that spent years hoarding teenagers has added a 35-year-old striker. Former Everton and Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness did not hold back: "It's clear that Chelsea have really thought long and hard that they've got the youth policy wrong, focusing exclusively on youth" (3). Welbeck reunites with his former Sunderland teammate Jordan Henderson, who is also expected to arrive on a free.

Alonso: the Real Madrid scar is healed

Xabi Alonso faced the questions head-on in his first press conference. His Real Madrid exit still lingers in the background, but the new Chelsea manager was unequivocal: "Luckily, there are not too many scars in my career. I got a scar, now it is healed, and I am determined to enjoy this next step, as I did when I started in Madrid" (4) (8). He inherits a side that finished 10th in the Premier League in 2025–26 and has already added Morgan Rogers for a British record fee (4).

Badiashile close to Napoli loan

Benoît Badiashile is nearing a move to Napoli. The deal is a season-long loan with an option to buy, and the French centre-back is open to the switch (5). New talks are scheduled this week to finalise terms.

Alajbegovic snubs Chelsea for Juventus

Kerim Alajbegovic will not be coming to Stamford Bridge. The 18-year-old Bosnian winger has signed a five-year deal with Juventus for around €40m, despite Chelsea being heavily linked (9). A blow, but one the club saw coming late in negotiations.

Fenerbahçe turn to Jackson after Dortmund stall

Fenerbahçe have grown tired of Dortmund's stance on Serhou Guirassy and are now looking at Nicolas Jackson as an alternative (10). Nothing concrete yet, but your striker is on their radar as the Turkish window remains open.

Fan-reaktioner

The mood around Barco is positive, with supporters noting that if Chelsea also land Chavarria and Henderson, the incoming business is nearly done and outgoings will then dictate the rest of the window. The Badiashile loan news is being met with cautious approval, though fans want the option to buy confirmed before celebrating. Full thread on r/chelseafc
