The week the midfield went missing
Brentford 3–0 Chelsea, and it was not close. Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho scored (2) (20), and the Blues have now gone 21 league games without a clean sheet (2). Three matches without a win. 9th on 7 points, goal difference -2, form reading W W L D L.
Xabi Alonso did not dress it up. "We dropped our consistency, and our competitive mentality needed in the second half," he said. "It's about 95 minutes, and we have not been able to keep that level throughout these few games in the start of the season" (7) (9). There is no trick to decode here. Chelsea are soft through the middle and cannot hold a level for a full match, and Friday made both problems visible at once.
The substitutions told the story
Alonso put on Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, 16, while chasing a game away at Brentford (4) (14). Joe Cole read it as a message: "we've not got enough that I'm putting a 16-year-old kid in to midfield when we're chasing the game away at our rivals" (4). Valentin Barco made his first Premier League start in that midfield and did not survive the review, with Steve Nicol saying he "isn't ready quite yet" (15).

This is what happens when Enzo Fernández is not replaced and Moises Caicedo, Reece James and Romeo Lavia are unavailable (4). Alonso is picking from a squad that does not cover its own holes. The youngest debutant of the week was the only bit of good news at Brentford.
Estêvão sits while the squad starves
Estêvão still has not started a Premier League game, restricted to 47 minutes across late cameos, including his 87th-minute run at Brentford (11). Meanwhile Liverpool are reportedly preparing a £100m move for him as a Mohamed Salah successor (3).
Chelsea want a long-term contract; the pitch time says something else. If you cannot start your most explosive teenager in a team that has gone three matches without a win, the development plan is failing on its own terms. Kerim Alajbegović chose Juventus after Chelsea could not promise him an immediate role (16). Kees Smit and Alex Scott are being tracked, but so are Liverpool and Manchester United (18) (21).
Patience is not the same as silence
Five games is not a season, and Alonso's record elsewhere says give him time (12). Fine. But 9th and a 21-game clean-sheet drought is not a blip either (2). Nine months of the same defensive leak predates the new manager.
The other half of the club is not waiting. Chelsea Women beat Birmingham City 2–0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Lexi Potter and Melvine Malard scoring, and they open their Champions League league phase against Austria Wien on Wednesday (5) (13). Sonia Bompastor's side goes into Europe with momentum. The men go in with questions.
What to watch
Watch who starts in midfield next weekend, and whether Estêvão finally gets a start instead of the 87th minute (11). Watch whether Alonso repeats the boardroom nudge in his next team sheet (4). And watch the accounts: Stefan Borson says a Stamford Bridge redevelopment could top £2bn against £1.4bn of existing debt (10). Sliding to 9th while planning a two-billion-pound rebuild is the week's real argument.
