The midfield runs through one absence
Moises Caicedo is not in the 20-man squad at the Emirates (6) (11) (17). That is the sentence that changes this game. Chelsea's build-up has run through him since Alonso arrived, and suddenly it does not. Romeo Lavia starts in his place (7). That is a real downgrade in ball-winning and it arrives against Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard, the best midfield Arsenal can field.
The attack is not the problem. Gary Neville says Arteta would swap his forward line for Chelsea's, and for once the bold claim holds up (26). Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Joao Pedro. That four can hurt anyone on the break. Sturridge put it plainly: the title talk is real, but it comes down to midfield fitness (27). Caicedo missing the first true test of the season is exactly the weakness he flagged.
Alonso makes the statement call at centre-back
Josh Acheampong starts ahead of Levi Colwill (3) (8). That is Alonso telling a homegrown teenager he trusts him in the biggest game of the season. Colwill is dropped, not injured, and it is the clearest selection signal of the Alonso era so far.

Acheampong has the pace to deal with the Saka threat down that side, and Saka needs watching despite his one goal in nine against Chelsea (31). But pace only helps if you read the game, and Arsenal move the ball too quickly to hide anyone. This is either the call that launches a career or one Alonso reverses by half-time. No middle ground at the Emirates.
The curse does not care about form
Chelsea have not beaten Arsenal in 11 matches, a run stretching over five years at the Emirates (29). Two wins from two to start the season means nothing against that. Arsenal, the reigning champions, are unbeaten in two as well (1). Both sides arrive perfect, but only one carries a hoodoo this heavy.
Arteta's own words give Chelsea a way in if you read them closely. He praised the talent, then pivoted straight to "structure" and "areas" (34). That is the language of a manager who knows the individual quality gap has narrowed. Neville sees it. The question is whether Chelsea's midfield, minus Caicedo, can win enough of the ball to let the front four answer.
What to watch
Hull City at Stamford Bridge next Saturday, Sept 12, then Brentford away on Sept 18. But this week's real story is the one playing out at the Emirates, live, with no Caicedo to lean on. If Lavia and Acheampong hold their ground, the title talk is not pundit noise anymore.
