The own goal that started it all
Mike Penders' Premier League debut lasted one mistake. The 21-year-old Belgian, starting only because Emiliano Martinez is recovering from jaw surgery, turned a routine ball into an own goal on his first league start, and Tottenham won 0–2 at Stamford Bridge (1) (7) (23). It was Xabi Alonso's first home defeat as Chelsea head coach (1) (13). After Everton away and Bournemouth at home, that was the week Chelsea needed to look like a top-four side. They looked like a team arguing with its own shape.
The midfield never existed
Alonso set up without a recognised striker, because Joao Pedro was unavailable with a training injury (6) (21). Tony Bloom's spreadsheets had nothing on this: the team sheet leaked through a Fantasy Premier League transfer before kickoff, and Alonso admitted he "didn't know that" (10). Set-piece defending was the other hole. Tottenham scored from a delivery Chelsea have conceded from all season, and the criticism of Alonso's approach and organisation that followed was the loudest of his tenure (4) (13) (21).
Palmer's red card is a pattern, not an accident
Cole Palmer got his first senior red card in the 0–2 defeat, then apologised on social media: "Not good enough" (6) (13). Alonso was careful, saying he needs to check the action before talking to his player (13). Fair enough. But Palmer's record against the big six is now the story as much as his talent, and Chelsea's disciplinary problem predates this manager (15) (17). A team that gives away a man and a set-piece goal at home cannot expect to win derbies.
Estevao, Scott and the January file
Estevao is reportedly shocked by his lack of minutes and could push for a January move, with Barcelona and PSG circling (1) (3) (11). Chelsea have verbally agreed personal terms with Bournemouth's Alex Scott and want it done by January 1st (16). They will scout Club Brugge's Nicolo Tresoldi, who has nine Champions League goals, in person (20) (25). Goalkeeper Freddy Bernal has signed to 2029 (19). The squad is being rebuilt in public while the first team argues with itself.
What to watch
Anfield on Wednesday 28 October in the Carabao Cup fourth round, with Palmer suspended (9) (18). Alonso has already said Penders starts that one, calling him a Courtois type (8). Then Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, then Sunderland away on 8 November (fixtures). If Penders holds up at Anfield and Chelsea beat United, the noise dies down. If not, the January file starts to look like a plan for a different manager.
