The week belonged to the women, not the men
Chelsea Women face Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, five points behind Manchester City in the WSL (5). That is the story of this week at this club. Sonia Bompastor's side have ground to make up already, and the London derby against Arsenal is the fixture that decides whether the gap closes or widens (5). Bompastor's message to her players was simple: enjoy the occasion, a big crowd for a London derby (1).
Sjoeke Nüsken called it what it is. Beating Arsenal would send an early statement about Chelsea's title ambitions (6). She is right. Five points is not a crisis in September, but it is the kind of margin that stops being recoverable if you drop points in the biggest home game of the autumn.
The fitness calls shape the XI
Three key players are doubts: Lauren James, Naomi Girma and Keira Walsh (20). Bompastor has decisions to make on all three, and against Arsenal those calls matter more than at any other point of the season so far (20). Arsenal arrive with their own changes, including Anneke Borbe in goal and Mariona on the wing (2).

This is the test Bompastor's squad depth was built for. James is the creative spark; Girma is the defensive anchor; Walsh controls the midfield. Lose one and you adjust. Lose two and the shape changes.
Meanwhile, the men sit 10th with seven points from five
The men's team has won two, drawn one and lost two of its last five, and the most recent result was a 3–0 defeat at Brentford on Friday 18 September. Seven points, tenth place, a goal difference of minus two. That is the reality after five matches.
Xabi Alonso's rebuild has not clicked yet, and the noise around it is growing. Estêvão, 19, has had limited minutes and Barcelona are monitoring his situation (3) (18). A player the club signed to be a cornerstone is being watched by one of Europe's biggest names because he cannot get on the pitch. That is not a rumour to ignore. It is a symptom (10).
The market keeps moving without the results
Chelsea's midfield search has hit two walls. Roma now value Manu Koné at around €100m after rejecting a summer offer (7) (19). Bournemouth want around £95m for Alex Scott and will not sell in January (22). Lamine Camara, who Chelsea missed on deadline day, is now on Liverpool's radar (17).
Asmir Begovic argued this week that no European football can help Chelsea focus on the domestic cups (4). Perhaps. But the squad that has to make that count is the one currently sitting tenth.
What to watch
Bournemouth come to Stamford Bridge on Saturday 10 October, after the international break. Before then, two things decide the mood around this club: the fitness calls on James, Girma and Walsh for the Arsenal derby, and whether Estêvão gets a run of starts once the league resumes. Alonso has three weeks to find answers. The WSL side does not have that luxury.
