Cucurella to Real Madrid, verbal agreement after the World Cup
Marc Cucurella is leaving. Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement with Chelsea to sign the left-back, and the deal will go through after the 2026 World Cup (1) (5) (8). Fabrizio Romano gave it his trademark "here we go" on Friday, confirming all parties are aligned, José Mourinho specifically requested the Spanish international, who has been a starter for Chelsea and impressed enough to attract interest from Atletico Madrid and Barcelona as well (1) (5) (7).
The fee sits around €50m to €60m depending on the source (1) (4) (7). That is roughly what Chelsea paid Brighton for him. The move leaves Xabi Alonso without one of the squad's most reliable performers before he has even taken his first training session.
Alonso plans to build around Enzo Fernandez
There is a sliver of good news. Xabi Alonso has no intention of letting Enzo Fernandez leave this summer, despite Real Madrid's admiration for the Argentine midfielder (6). A Football Insider source said Chelsea are "in no rush to lose him" and Alonso wants Fernandez at the heart of his project. If Fernandez does eventually move, it will not be to Manchester City (6).

Joe Cole and Ashley Cole have publicly backed that stance too. The former Chelsea pair urged Alonso to keep both Fernandez and Cucurella, arguing the club should sell "four or five" other players instead to raise funds (3).
Left-back becomes an urgent priority
The club now need a replacement, and quickly. Chelsea are already being linked with moves, one report points to an elite 21-year-old left-back as a must-sign target after Cucurella's exit (9).
