George sold, Xhaka snubs Chelsea, and Santos becomes the £50m question

George gone, Xhaka says no, and the churn continues

Tyrique George to Everton for up to £24m (1) (2) (7). Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for €55m (36). Andrey Santos valued at £50m with Manchester United and Newcastle circling (3) (5) (14). Enzo Fernandez has a clear path to Arsenal, and Real Madrid felt compelled to issue a public denial about their own interest (20) (26).

This is not a club in pre-season mode. This is a club in a revolving door, and the door has not stopped spinning since Alonso walked through it.

The defining story of the week is Granit Xhaka. Chelsea bid £8m for the 33-year-old at Sunderland. Alonso reportedly pushed for it. Xhaka said no and is staying put (4) (15) (35). The rejection triggered a five-man shortlist to be drawn up on the fly (10). Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness called the pursuit "weird" and said Chelsea "are starting to make a lot of mistakes" (22).

He is right to be blunt. An £8m bid for a 33-year-old Championship midfielder, fronted by a manager who worked with him years ago, rejected publicly, is not a strategy. It is a hunch dressed up as recruitment.

The Santos squeeze

Andrey Santos is 22, coming off a breakthrough season, and now he is on the market. Manchester United have enquired. Newcastle are interested. Chelsea have let it be known he is not untouchable if the price is right (3) (5) (14).

The Reddit reaction was swift and anxious. Within hours of the Ornstein and Romano reports dropping, fans were debating whether selling Santos to fund a Tchouameni move makes sense. That is exactly the calculation: Alonso has reportedly convinced Aurélien Tchouameni to join Chelsea (16), and that deal needs money.

£50m for Santos starts to look like a fee designed to unlock the next signing. Cold, but rational. The problem is the cumulative effect. Another academy graduate out the door in George. Another big-name departure in Cucurella. Another midfielder being dangled. At some point the squad stops feeling like a project and starts feeling like a catalogue.

The other moving parts

Nicolas Jackson returns from a Bayern Munich loan they declined to make permanent (28). Liam Delap wants to stay and fight for his place, ignoring Florent Malouda's advice to leave and Everton's interest (12) (13) (28).

In defence, Chelsea have rejoined the race for Jules Kounde (12), enquired about a Manchester City defender (17), and are among clubs linked with Virgil van Dijk (34). Inter Milan want Trevoh Chalobah, with Como now unlikely to sign him permanently (24). That is four centre-back stories in one week, none of them resolved.

Alonso needs a settled back line. He is not getting one in July.

Palmer's message, James's scan

Cole Palmer spoke about his World Cup exclusion with the clarity he shows on the pitch: "I know what I could have offered, something different to what the manager chose. But I can't change the decision" (21) (31). No whining. Just a quiet certainty that Tuchel got it wrong. He is right.

Reece James had a scan ahead of England's Last 16 tie against Mexico. Results are in, specifics are scarce (18). For a player who has missed 50-plus games across the last three seasons, every scan is a moment held breath.

What to watch

The Santos decision is the one that matters most. If United or Newcastle meet the £50m valuation, Chelsea have a choice: sell a young midfielder to fund a marquee Alonso target, or hold the line and risk an unhappy player. The Tchouameni links make the direction of travel fairly obvious. Next week will tell us whether the revolving door has a brake or just a faster setting.
