Ken Bates dies at 94 as Alonso's Chelsea reset gathers pace

The man who saved Chelsea

Ken Bates died Saturday at 94, and it is worth pausing to understand what that means (1) (8) (18). He bought Chelsea for £1 in 1982, when the club was £3.5m in debt and Stamford Bridge was falling apart. He fought off property developers, rebuilt the stadium, and kept the lights on through relegation battles that threatened to finish the club entirely. He was also impossible, litigious, confrontational, and often at war with his own supporters. But without Ken Bates there is no Abramovich era, no Munich 2012, no Chelsea as anyone recognises it today. The bridge between extinction and empire had a name.

Garnacho was a mistake. Alonso is not repeating it.

Alejandro Garnacho failed to report for pre-season training. Chelsea's response is not to negotiate, not to rehabilitate, it is to sell. The asking price is €50m, and AS Roma are circling (4) (5) (11) (12) (14) (17) (19) (20) (25) (28).

This is the clearest signal yet of how Xabi Alonso intends to operate. A six-year contract signed last summer means nothing if the player does not fit. Garnacho's market value has dropped by €17m in a single season (14). Chelsea are eating the loss and moving on. Alonso identified this week what the squad needs before September (3). A winger who skips training was never going to make the list.

Squad shape in July: ins, outs, and a loan that matters

The confirmed summer business so far: Marco Palestra and Geovany Quenda in, Marc Cucurella out to Real Madrid (6). Jesse Derry has joined Sporting CP on a season-long loan, which is the right level for a 19-year-old attacker who needs to learn how to play against men, not more under-23 football (2) (3) (7) (16) (23). Sporting develop talent. This is not a parking loan.

Julia Bartel has left Chelsea Women permanently for Juventus (10) (24). Quiet exit, part of the summer reset.

On the rumour front: Chelsea want Danilo Santos, City are interested in Malo Gusto but will not pay £75m, and Alonso is pushing for a Real Madrid player he knows from last season (7) (9) (15) (21).

Reece James returns, and so does hope

Reece James played nearly 50 minutes for England in their World Cup quarter-final win over Norway (6) (9). England are through to the semi-finals. James is fit. For Chelsea, that single fact matters more than any transfer rumour this summer. A fully operational Reece James is the difference between scrambling for top four and competing for more. Alonso will have watched every minute.

What to watch

The World Cup semi-finals feature Chelsea's two captains, Reece James for England and whoever wears the armband for the other side, facing each other Wednesday (Reddit 5). Beyond that, the Garnacho situation needs resolution fast. A player who skips training cannot linger at the club. And Alonso's rebuild has barely started: Palestra, Quenda, and a list of targets that reportedly includes a Spanish midfielder Alonso coached at Real Madrid (8) (15). Pre-season begins soon. The new Chelsea starts there.
