Xhaka agrees terms as Alonso puts his stamp on Chelsea before day one

The Alonso era begins with a statement, not a question

Granit Xhaka has agreed personal terms with Chelsea. A full verbal agreement is in place, the player is pushing for the move personally, and Chelsea have lodged a formal bid worth €30m (5) (18) (19) (22). At 32, Xhaka becomes the second-most expensive over-32 transfer in history (19). Sunderland say he is not for sale (23). They always say that.

This is Xabi Alonso's first signature move before he has even signed his own contract, and it tells you everything about how he intends to operate. Alonso played alongside Xhaka. He trusts him. His former Leverkusen analyst, Marcel Daum, calls Alonso "an expert in reading the game" whose "in-game coaching is absolutely excellent" (16). The first thing that expert did was pick up the phone to a 32-year-old holding midfielder who knows exactly what he wants on the pitch.

The fee will raise eyebrows. Chelsea spending big on a player past 30 rips up the recent recruitment script entirely. The club that spent two years hoarding teenagers and handing out eight-year deals is now building around a veteran because the new manager demanded it (29). Alonso is flexing authority before his office chair is warm, and the club are backing him.

Lacroix next: the defence is being rebuilt in plain sight

While the Xhaka saga dominates headlines, Chelsea are closing in on Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix. Ben Jacobs reports a formal bid is expected soon, with Lacroix open to the move and Palace bracing for an offer around £47m (7) (12). That follows a separate report of a €55m defensive signing being prepared post-World Cup (15).

This is not scattergun spending. It is targeted, position by position. A holding midfielder who can dictate tempo. A centre-back to partner Levi Colwill or Wesley Fofana. The plan is legible.

The French press were unimpressed with Lacroix's recent display against Norway (33), but Alonso's system demands defenders who can step into midfield and cover space behind. Lacroix's recovery pace fits. Chelsea are betting on the profile, not the one-game narrative.

The departures are a clearance, not a panic

Trevoh Chalobah is the most active piece on the board. Chelsea have rejected Como's opening bid of €25m plus add-ons, holding firm at €40m (8) (17). Inter Milan remain interested. The academy graduate could still leave, but Chelsea are not giving anyone a discount.

Liam Delap has an exit proposal on the table (17). One Premier League goal last season. Everton are circling. The striker experiment is over.

Enzo Fernandez remains the wildcard. Real Madrid have reportedly offered two players, including Eduardo Camavinga, in a swap deal (21). Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich sits deeper on Chelsea's list if Fernandez departs. The midfield Alonso inherits could look radically different from the one Maresca left behind.

Commercial ground shifting beneath the football

Chelsea have lowered the asking price for a front-of-shirt sponsor to £45m-£50m per year and held talks with HP Inc. (9). A deal is not done, but the direction is clear: secure a technology partner that can also streamline club operations. It is pragmatic and overdue. The blank-shirt risk from last summer is not being repeated.

What to watch

Sunderland's stance on Xhaka is the next domino. Publicly, they are holding the line. Privately, a 32-year-old agitating for a move to London with a €30m bid on the table usually gets his way. Alonso's first training session will be the real start. Everything before that is paperwork.
