Atlético slams Barcelona over Álvarez pursuit, Gordon deal confirmed

Atlético shuts the door on Álvarez, hard

Atlético Madrid is furious, and they are not hiding it. The club publicly stated Julián Álvarez is "not for sale" and accused Barcelona of "behaving like a small team" in the saga (11) (14). They are "fed up with months and months of lies, half-truths, and fabricated stories" (11). Captain Koke piled on: "He's an Atlético player, contract until 2030, and a clause worth many millions" (12). The message is unambiguous. Álvarez may want the move, but Atlético will not make it easy.

Gordon deal done, and Shearer approves

Anthony Gordon is a Barcelona player, and the transfer is drawing praise. Alan Shearer called it "a good deal for both" parties, noting Gordon "clearly wants to leave" and that Newcastle's manager "hasn't played him for the last five or six weeks" (2). The winger was the third fastest in this Champions League edition (3), adding raw pace to Flick's attack.

How Laporta and Flick won the Gordon race

Bayern Munich thought Barcelona was bluffing, but Joan Laporta and Hansi Flick personally convinced Gordon to pick Barça over Bayern and Liverpool (7). The signing is being framed as the start of "Hansi Flick 2.0" at the club, the first major move that directly backs the manager's project alongside Deco's sporting vision (8).

Barça not done: Silva or Rashford next?

The club is reportedly preparing another €100M for reinforcements (4). Bernardo Silva, now a free agent after leaving Manchester City, has been offered to Barcelona by agent Jorge Mendes. His salary is not seen as an obstacle (9). Marcus Rashford is also in the conversation as an alternative (9).

De Jong's place under scrutiny

With Gavi returning and Marc Bernal rising, a debate is brewing: is Frenkie de Jong still an automatic starter? His role in Flick's midfield is no longer guaranteed heading into next season (10). It is a genuine talking point for the summer.

Academy watch: Hamza debuts for Egypt

Young Barça player Hamza Abdelkarim made his senior debut for Egypt on Thursday in a World Cup preparation friendly. He is currently on loan with a buy option (15).

Fan reactions

The mood among fans is split between excitement and anxiety. The Gordon signing has landed well, with supporters buzzing about the speed of the deal and the Champions League-caliber profile he brings. But the Álvarez saga has tensions running high online. Atlético's public fury has not cooled expectations; if anything, Romano's report that Álvarez has formally told Atlético he wants Barcelona only dialed up the noise. Many fans are already looking past Álvarez to Bernardo Silva, seeing the free transfer as a no-brainer. Full thread here.
