Fenerbahçe's extraordinary election congress enters its decisive second day today, Sunday. The first day wrapped up with both presidential candidates, Aziz Yıldırım and Hakan Safi, addressing the general assembly. Hakan Safi came out swinging on the transfer front. He claims to have a principle agreement with Inter's Hakan Çalhanoğlu (6), and is working with Paolo Maldini on a three-player signing operation that also includes Çalhanoğlu (11). Separately, Safi's reported pursuit of Marseille's Mason Greenwood has hit a wall: the French club wants €50 million plus €5 million in bonuses, a fee described as eye-watering. (13)
Yıldırım counters with Suárez claim and Bundesliga target
Aziz Yıldırım is not backing down in the transfer arms race. He told the congress he has a signed agreement in place with striker Suárez: "I do not speak without signed contracts." (1) Yıldırım is also targeting a left-back who has made waves in the Bundesliga, promising to strengthen the position if elected. Safi's fiery message to the assembly
Hakan Safi delivered one of the most combative speeches of the first day: "Until now I have never let anyone take what is mine. When it comes to Fenerbahçe... if it's a table, I'll break the table; if it's a structure, I'll destroy the structure." (10) He also vowed to bring three world stars to the club if elected. (6)
Saran exits to applause, undecided voters hold the key
Sadettin Saran left the congress to a round of applause (15), while reports from the first day suggest "undecided" voters will decide this election. (3) With no clear favorite emerging from day one, today's ballot could hinge on which candidate swayed the wavering delegates during their speeches.
