Fenerbahçe's week is one match long
Monday at RAMS Park. The 407th meeting with Galatasaray, and the first one this season where the table actually listens (4)(10). Fenerbahçe sit third on 16 points from eight games, +16 goal difference, and a win levels the points with the champions (6). Lose, and the gap opens at the worst possible moment, four days before Liverpool come to Istanbul.
That is the week. Everything else was staging.
The defence has not answered for Villa
Aston Villa 6–0 Fenerbahçe on October 14 is still the loudest result of the season (Champions League). Since then: 3–0 against Alanyaspor, then 2–2 at home to Slavia Prague, two goals shipped to a side Fenerbahçe should be beating at home.

Nathan Aké is out of the derby, and Marco Asensio joins him on the absentee list (3). That is the spine of the team missing for the biggest game of the autumn, not a rotation question. Kartal has eight league games of evidence that this group defends well enough to win 8–0 over Eyupspor and 3–0 at Rizespor, and one night of evidence that it does not when the opponent is good.
So what does he do with the back line? The reported answer is a surprise plan built around stopping Galatasaray's shape rather than matching it (12).
Guendouzi gets the keys
Kartal has given Matteo Guendouzi a specific instruction for the derby (9). Read that as the manager accepting the midfield battle decides this one. Galatasaray are expected to bring in Mario Lemina for Gabriel Sara, a more physical, more destructive choice, which says Okan Buruk sees the same fight (8).
Buruk has also told his players he wants the same tempo they showed against Lille (11). Galatasaray will press. Fenerbahçe will have to play through it or over it, and Guendouzi is the man tasked with picking which.
The one break: Rafael Leão is out for Galatasaray, with Leroy Sané pushing to start instead (3)(7). Losing Leão removes the direct running that has hurt Fenerbahçe in recent derbies. Fenerbahçe lead the all-time series across 407 meetings, while Galatasaray have taken the more recent ones (4). That is the pattern to break.
What to watch
Monday first. Then Goztepe at home on October 31, Liverpool at home on November 4, and Çorum away on November 8. A derby win sets up a run of three games that could define the season. A derby defeat and the Liverpool night becomes a damage-limitation exercise.
Watch the shape Kartal picks at RAMS Park. That is where this week is actually being decided.
