Fenerbahçe's election will decide more than a president

Fenerbahçe does not have a football problem this week. It has an existential one. The June 7 presidential election has swallowed everything: transfer policy, sporting direction, the very identity of the club. Two men, two visions, and a fanbase caught between nostalgia and the desperate need for something new.

A former Galatasaray manager at Fenerbahçe?

The story that cut through all the campaign noise this week was Hakan Safi's reported plan to appoint a world-famous coach who previously managed Galatasaray (12). Every Fenerbahçe fan knows the names that fit that description. The audacity is calculated. Safi is signaling a clean break from the Yıldırım era, even if it means borrowing from across the divide. He also invited Paolo Maldini to Istanbul for talks about a sporting director role (8). Maldini at Fenerbahçe. Let that sink in. It is ambitious, it is eye-catching, and it either reeks of desperation or smells like genuine transformation. Fans will decide which.

Aziz Yıldırım, meanwhile, is running the campaign everyone expected. He appeared in Şanlıurfa, met supporters, and declared with trademark defiance: "I am coming to stop Fenerbahçe's decline. This 12-year trajectory ends now. If we cannot stop it, no one can" (3). He unveiled his full board list (13) and promised two strikers, with scouts already working the French market (10). The message is clear: the old boss knows how to fix this. Trust him.

The squad is already being picked apart

While the candidates trade promises, the actual squad faces a summer of raids. İsmail Yüksek is the name on Premier League shortlists, with a major offer reportedly incoming (6). His future hinges entirely on who wins on June 7 and what they greenlight. Kim Min-jae, the defender Fenerbahçe sold and now desperately wants back, is the subject of a three-way fight involving Juventus and, significantly, Galatasaray (4) (5). Losing a former fan favorite to the archrival would be politically radioactive for whichever president is in charge.

Then there is Fred. Atlético-MG are circling, and Bernard, his former Shakhtar teammate, is working the phones personally: "I know the player he is and what he can deliver. I hope it works out" (9). Fred has been a cornerstone. Losing him would hurt, regardless of the fee.

And in the strangest rumor of the week, Gazzetta dello Sport linked Milan's Rafael Leão to Fenerbahçe and Manchester United (7). The timeline points to 2026, which makes this less a transfer story and more a statement of intent. Fenerbahçe wants to be in conversations like this. Whether they belong there is a different question.

What happens on June 8

The club finished second with 74 points and a +40 goal difference. Good numbers. Zero trophies. That is the brutal math underpinning this election. Neither candidate has explained, with any specificity, how they close the gap to Galatasaray on the pitch rather than in the headlines.

The Yüksek situation is the immediate test. If a Premier League bid lands before the vote, the outgoing administration might be forced to act. The Kim Min-jae race will not pause for electioneering either. Galatasaray's interest turns a transfer saga into a proxy war.

June 7 decides everything. June 8 is when the real work begins.
