Fenerbahçe finished second last season, 74 points, +40 goal difference. That is a title challenge. This week, though, has been about something else entirely: who stays and who goes.
Three stories converged. Diego Carlos, the club's most expensive defender ever, has gone missing from training camp (5). The board cannot reach him. The double game: signing and surviving
Fenerbahçe have shaken hands with Serhou Guirassy and Ollie Watkins (21). A third signing is reportedly imminent (13). On paper, that front line, with Vedat Muriqi already confirmed, looks built to win the league.
But ask yourself what it costs. The club is chasing Mason Greenwood while Roma hovers with a €40m-plus-bonuses offer to Marseille (1). Kim Min-Jae is back on the radar, with Galatasaray also circling (2). Marcus Rashford is reportedly willing to take a pay cut, and both Istanbul giants are interested (9). Every incoming name comes with a shadow: the player being sold to fund it, or the player being unsettled by the noise.
The math is simple. You cannot lose Skriniar, Fred, Oosterwolde, Roma has registered interest (15), and Diego Carlos in one window and expect to improve. You just cannot.
Skriniar is the bellwether
Mário Branco called Skriniar a player who "makes everyone happy" (8). Benfica's Rui Costa did not deny interest (4). İsmail Kartal is reportedly worried about the Portuguese push for a key player (19).
Skriniar is not just a centre-back. He is the captain, the organizing principle of the back line, and the club's most reliable performer. If he goes, the defensive rebuild becomes a crisis. The club knows this. The question is whether they can say no when the bids arrive.
Diego Carlos: a record signing gone silent
Five sources confirm the same thing: Diego Carlos missed camp, and the club cannot reach him (5). This is not a minor disciplinary issue. This is a player who cost a transfer record, now apparently in open conflict. The club wants to impose sanctions. The relationship looks broken.

But the real story of the coming week is whether Skriniar trains, whether Diego Carlos surfaces, and whether Fred's phone keeps buzzing. The transfer window is not a sideshow to pre-season. It is the whole show.
