Hammarby out of Europe as Rydström calls second half a disaster

The night Europe went dark

Paulos Abraham scored after two minutes in Brussels. Hammarby led 1–0 on the night, 2–1 on aggregate, and a Europa League playoff was 45 minutes away. Then the second half happened. Anderlecht scored three. Hammarby are out (5) (6).

Henrik Rydström did not search for excuses. "The second half is a fucking disaster, I am really, really disappointed," he said. "We gave it away" (10). That is the line that will stick. Not a hard-luck story, not a VAR grievance. A team that held a lead and let it dissolve.

Abraham's moment, then the collapse

Abraham's early strike was sharp, decisive, exactly the start Hammarby needed (6). Anderlecht equalised through Danylo Sikan minutes after the restart, and the momentum never swung back. Abraham fronted up afterward: "We only have ourselves to blame" (6). He pointed to mentality. When a player frames a European elimination in those terms, it is not coach-speak. It is an admission that something broke.

The bench call

Nahir Besara and Amin Boudri both started on the bench (11). That is a decision that invites scrutiny after a second-half capitulation, and it will receive it. Squad depth has been a recurring question under Rydström. A Europa League knockout tie is the wrong stage for it to surface this starkly. He backed his selection. The second half offered no defence of it.

The other Hammarby keep rolling

While the men's side crashed out of Europe, Hammarby's women delivered a statement week. Two wins over Växjö, 3–0 and 5–0, extended their lead at the top of the Damallsvenskan (2) (9). Fanny Petersson ran the first match. Filippa Curmark debuted in the second wearing green and white for the first time since her move from Häcken, calling the atmosphere "mäktig" (8). Four scorers in the 5–0: Nyhagen, Sørum, Bragstad, and Petersson (9). No drama, just goals. That is a team in full control.

What comes next

European football is not finished. Hammarby drop into Conference League qualifying round three against Raków Częstochowa, away on Wednesday August 6, return leg at home on August 13 (7) (16). Rydström called the Anderlecht second half a disaster. He has four days to make sure the next European trip does not earn the same word.
