Iraola starts with a win, but Gomez is the real story
Liverpool beat Sunderland 4–2 in Andoni Iraola's first match in charge on Saturday. Kieran Morrison, Federico Chiesa, and two others found the net, and the intensity Iraola was hired to restore was visible from the opening whistle (10)(11). Trey Nyoni looked like a player who belongs, and the post-match numbers back that up (22). Iraola called it a good starting point (10).
That is the surface. The real story is Joe Gomez.
Gomez went down early, and suddenly a pre-season run-out became a problem. Iraola did not dance around it: "Probably the worst news came straight away, with the injury to Joe. We were happy because we were getting through all the training without losing any players. Unluckily for us, straight away we've lost Joe" (10).

Defensive depth was already the squad's softest layer. Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet started against Sunderland, but Jacquet is being managed carefully, shoulder issue, £60m signing, still bedding in (15). Three World Cup players are returning this week, which helps the numbers (14). But at centre-back, one injury changes everything. Liverpool are thin, and it is only late July.
Barcola wants Liverpool. PSG want a fortune.
The week's defining off-pitch story is Bradley Barcola. The 22-year-old PSG winger has made his position clear: he wants Liverpool. He has rejected a new contract in Paris, turned down Arsenal and Bayern Munich, and given priority to the Anfield project if a deal can be struck (4)(6)(7)(9). Fabrizio Romano confirmed Liverpool have been leading the race since April.
Now the hard part. PSG are asking between €120m and €170m, using Morgan Rogers and Elliot Anderson's recent transfer fees as valuation yardsticks (12)(16). Liverpool value Barcola lower. No formal negotiations have begun yet, and that gap is not a small one.
Barcola is Mbappe-endorsed, electric off the left, and exactly the profile of signing that signals ambition (1). But this is not a deal Liverpool can finesse. At some point, someone writes a cheque. The question is how big.
Diomande slips away, Chiesa may follow
Yan Diomande agreed a £100m move to RB Leipzig this week, ending Liverpool's pursuit before it properly started (2). Real Madrid were also circling (5)(19). Multiple reports suggest Diomande's camp used Premier League interest as leverage (12). Fair play to them. Liverpool move on.
Federico Chiesa scored against Sunderland and looked sharp (3)(10). Nottingham Forest are reportedly ready to offer him a key role and £100,000 a week (21). He is 28, has something to prove, and might fancy being the main man somewhere. Or he might fancy forcing his way into Iraola's plans. Next week's training sessions will tell.
What to watch
Iraola meets two key arrivals next week, players worth a combined £241m (team background). Their integration into the squad, and the speed of it, will define how serious this pre-season feels. Gomez's injury timeline also lands this week. If it is bad, Liverpool enter August needing a centre-back, not just wanting Barcola.
