Iraola's first Liverpool lineup exposes the market's unanswered questions

Iraola's Liverpool starts with questions the market must answer

The Iraola era opened at St James' Park and the team sheet told you more than any pre-season interview could. Jeremy Jacquet and Rio Ngumoha started. Alexis Mac Allister did not. Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa were not even in the matchday squad (2) (7) (10). Whatever Liverpool are building, this was the first public drawing of it.

The lineup is a statement about who Iraola trusts

Jacquet starting in a back line with Van Dijk and Kerkez is the headline. Ngumoha from kickoff, at a ground that eats young wingers, is braver still (10) (12). Mac Allister on the bench is a decision, not a rest. Kerkez already spelled out the plan: "We need to press quick" (11). That identity does not wait for a £70m signing to arrive.

The absence list is just as loud. Harvey Elliott's snub vs Newcastle comes after a season of being in and out, and Chiesa's absence is now explained rather than assumed (7) (9). Lewis Koumas made the squad instead (9). The squad is talking about a new manager, but the bench tomorrow is already telling players where they stand.

The market is a mess that says a lot about ambition

Liverpool were quoted over £70m for one target and saw Brighton reject exactly that figure (9) (27). Minteh has said Anfield is in his thoughts, which is the polite version of "come and get me" (15). The Barcola saga looks close to dead: Romano says Liverpool have slammed the brakes and are now tracking Ibrahim Mbaye (14). PSG wanted about €170m, an astronomical ask even for FSG (13).

Put it together and the picture is a club that wants players but keeps discovering the asking price is a number designed to say no. Tottenham hovering over Gakpo adds another moving part the club does not need (16).

What to watch

Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday, 29 August (NEXT MATCH). Iraola's first home league game, and the first real chance to judge whether the fast press Kerkez described survives beyond an away opener. The window then closes two days later, on 1 September (9). Anything Liverpool do in the market between now and then shapes the side that actually plays this season. The team that started this week is not finished.
