Soldier Field gave us the real Iraola, now the real work starts
Liverpool's preseason wrapped up in Chicago against Leeds, and for the first time this summer the full picture was visible. Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Ryan Gravenberch all started. Iraola called it before the match: "my idea is that the three of them will play" (5). This was not a fitness exercise. It was the closest thing to a first-choice XI the new manager has fielded, and it told you everything about the intensity he demands. Calvin Ramsay put it bluntly: high pressing, aggressive full-backs, a coach who does not bend (13).
The identity is clear. The depth is not.
Barcola is the litmus test
Liverpool are preparing a first bid for Bradley Barcola. PSG will reject it (15). That is the dance. The real number sits around £120 million, and both clubs are expected to keep talking (15). Barcola is 23, devastating off the left, and exactly the profile Iraola's system needs alongside Isak and Wirtz.

The pursuit has consequences. Liverpool are now open to selling Cody Gakpo, with Tottenham circling (3) (20). Cold, pragmatic, and revealing. The new hierarchy does not see Gakpo as untouchable. They see him as a funding mechanism for the player they actually want.
Salah's exit deserved more
Mohamed Salah is close to joining Trabzonspor (1) (4). Atletico Madrid enquired too (21), but Turkey appears to be the destination. No Anfield send-off, no final trophy. Just a contract expiry and a quiet departure.
The club is briefing that the Salah replacement may already be internal (11). That is a gamble of staggering proportions. You do not replace 200-plus goals with a system tweak. Barcola is the obvious external answer, but until that deal is signed, the post-Salah era reads as a void, not a strategy.
The window is not done, and it cannot afford to be
Fresh contact has been made for Yan Diomande at Sporting (8). Inter Milan are stepping up their pursuit of Curtis Jones (10). Jeremy Jacquet is nursing discomfort and being handled cautiously (14). The right-back situation remains unresolved, with voices already calling for a Trent Alexander-Arnold return (7). A Liverpool goalkeeper faced 36 shots in one preseason outing and still passed with flying colours (2). That is a nice individual story and a damning reflection of the protection in front of him.
Iraola still does not know his best back four. He may not know his midfield either if Jones leaves. The league opener is approaching, and this squad still looks two or three pieces short.
What to watch
The Barcola bid lands this week. PSG's response shapes everything. If Gakpo moves, it happens fast. Iraola has the identity. Ramsay says the players have bought in completely (13). The question now is whether the board matches that commitment before the window slams shut.
