Weekly Analysis

The Sunderland draw said everything — and United's rebuild is already underway

The performance that framed the week

Let's start with the game that set the tone. A 0–0 at Sunderland — a side not yet established in the Premier League — was not a disaster in isolation. But the manner of it was damning. United produced zero shots on target, zero key passes, and won just 36% of their duels (15). Joshua Zirkzee, handed a rare start as the focal point, was anonymous. Carrick himself admitted the Dutchman looked "isolated" and "so weak" — telling words from a manager who is, by nature, measured (11). That kind of directness from a head coach is not routine. It signals something.

The absence of Casemiro — out with a minor injury — was felt immediately (12). That should trouble supporters more than the result itself. When one 34-year-old defensive midfielder being absent reduces your team to this level of structural dysfunction, it exposes a dependency that cannot be sustained. United have known this for two seasons. The Sunderland performance was just the latest evidence that knowing a problem and solving it are very different things.

There was one genuine bright spot. Kobbie Mainoo reached 100 appearances for the club at 21 years old (13). In a week full of noise and negativity, that milestone is worth acknowledging. He is the one homegrown talent who genuinely looks like a United player of the future. The problem is he cannot do it alone.

Goalkeeper Senne Lammens was singled out by the English press as United's standout performer on the night (17). When your goalkeeper is your best player in a 0–0 against a newly promoted side, you do not need a tactical breakdown to understand the situation.

The transfer picture: midfield reinforcement is coming

INEOS appear to have heard the message loud and clear. Ederson from Atalanta has reportedly agreed personal terms with the club, with United said to be "ready to close the deal" (5) (10) (14). At 26, with 15 goals this season from midfield, he is exactly the profile United need — a box-to-box midfielder who contributes at both ends. The Romano-backed reports suggest this one is close (10). If it gets done, it would be the most significant piece of inbound business in some time.

There is more. Joao Gomes remains on the radar, with United still considered favourites despite reported interest from Atletico Madrid (9). Orkun Kökçü, valued at 60 million euros, is also being tracked as a rotational option (3). Ferdi Kadıoğlu from Brighton has emerged as another name on the list (4). The volume of midfield targets — all at once — confirms what Carrick's post-Sunderland comments implied: the engine room is being rebuilt, not patched.

On the outgoing side, Amad Diallo's future looks increasingly uncertain. United have reportedly made a decision to sell, with a £30m Juventus player entering the conversation as a swap-related option (8). Amad's trajectory over the past 12 months has been one of the season's more painful narratives for supporters who believed in him early. It may simply be time to move on.

Defensively, United have learned the asking price for Sporting CP's Maximiliano Araujo — a left-sided option with 11 goal contributions this season and seen as a long-term alternative to Luke Shaw (18). David Affengruber of Elche is also being tracked (19). The squad needs depth at the back. These are sensible targets.

What to watch next week

The home game against Brentford at Old Trafford is the immediate priority (1) (2). After the Sunderland showing, United need a performance as much as a result. Watch whether Carrick rotates Zirkzee out of the starting eleven — his comments this week made that decision feel like a matter of when, not if. Watch also for any official movement on Ederson. If a bid is submitted before the week is out, it would signal that INEOS are prepared to move decisively rather than let another transfer window drift. That, more than any single result, would be the most meaningful development of the week ahead.
