Maffeo lands in Athens: "Easiest decision"
Pablo Maffeo touched down in Athens on Thursday (2). No hesitation from the right-back when the call came from Piraeus.
"It was a very easy decision. When the biggest club in Greece wants you, you can't say no," Maffeo said (2). "I come with huge appetite, I'm very excited and I hope to achieve many things."
He was in constant contact with the club even during his holidays. Now he is ready to meet teammates and start pre-season. Maffeo becomes Olympiacos' second summer signing, following Kostas Fortounis (2).
A Lille right-back also on the shortlist
Olympiacos are not done at right-back. The club are looking at a Portuguese defender at Lille as cover behind Maffeo, while also searching for a left-back option (1). The Lille man has previously played for Estoril and Sporting Lisbon, and is viewed as an alternative should the primary targets not land (1).
Marmol or Carmo? The centre-back decision
Kostas Nikolakopoulos has weighed in on the ongoing defender search. The choice appears to be between Mika Marmol and David Carmo, with the Greek journalist also discussing the goalkeeper situation and describing a "white smoke" moment in the club's transfer dealings (3).
