Mijnans debuts with intent as PSV's summer rebuild takes shape

The rebuild has started, and the signals are mixed

PSV beat Rakow Czestochowa 3–2 on Saturday in what was, above all else, Sven Mijnans' unofficial debut (1) (18). The €13m midfielder from AZ started, played a half, and Peter Bosz did not hide his enthusiasm: "A good impression. You could see straight away that he can play football. I'm going to enjoy working with him" (16) (17). One friendly against Polish opposition proves nothing on its own. But when a manager who has been clear about the squad overhaul he is overseeing reacts like that to a new signing, it registers. Bosz is not a man who hands out compliments cheaply.

Saibari is gone, and the hole is real

Ismael Saibari picked up an injury against Canada and will miss Morocco's World Cup quarter-final against France (11) (15). His tournament is over. So is his time at PSV. The Bayern Munich move is done, the announcement a formality after the World Cup (10) (21).

Bosz called him "ready for an absolute top club" (21). The quote is a compliment and a problem in one sentence. Saibari was PSV's midfield engine. Mijnans arrives with the billing of replacement, but one half of a pre-season friendly does not answer whether he can fill that output. Mijnans himself described his failed AZ exit as a "hard blow" and said he used the disappointment to come back stronger (2). That mentality helps. Bosz called him "an intelligent player" (17). The intelligence was visible on Saturday, neat in possession and quick to read space. But Saibari brought goals and chaos. Mijnans brings control. They are different profiles, and the team will feel that difference.

The exit door is wide open

Three names were told this week they are no longer in Bosz's plans: Isaac Babadi, Joël Drommel, and Adamo Nagalo (10). Babadi has concrete interest from Austria and Switzerland, but his PSV career never took off the way it was supposed to. Drommel and Nagalo were squad players and nothing more. No sentimentality from Bosz. That is how a rebuild works.

Armando Obispo has an offer from RC Lens, and PSV are open to a sale (13) (14) (19). A Champions League move for the defender, which helps everyone. Less helpful: PSV, Ajax, and Feyenoord all missed out on young defender Emmanuel Fejokwu, who chose Club Brugge (24). Losing a domestic talent race to a Belgian side is the kind of defeat that should bother the scouting department. No big headlines from it, just a quiet signal that PSV's pull is not what it was.

A quiet signal in the other direction: Ricardo Pepi now intends to stay (3). He was close to Fulham. The reversal is a win for Bosz, who needs attacking depth and cannot afford to lose a striker on top of everything else.

What to watch

Ruben van Bommel is still building fitness, and PSV are taking no risks with his integration (7). The Johan Cruijff Schaal is approaching and Bosz has already flagged that World Cup internationals may not be available (6). That puts the fixture in a strange place: a curtain-raiser without the curtain cast.

On the transfer front, watch Kodai Sano. PSV are going all in for the NEC midfielder (5). That pursuit tells you something. If Sano arrives, it raises the question of whether Joey Veerman is on his way out, or whether Bosz simply wants a different kind of midfield depth. Either way, a team that loses Saibari and shops in the Eredivisie for a Japanese international is making a bet. Whether it pays out starts to become clear next week.
