PSV crushed 0–4 by AZ as Geertruida saga drags on

AZ dismantle PSV 0–4 in the Johan Cruijff Schaal

That was not how you start a title defence. PSV 0–4 AZ in the season curtain-raiser on Sunday, and it was ugly from the eighth minute when Joey Veerman saw red (1) (2) (8) (9). Your team never recovered.

AZ ran riot against ten men. The Eredivisie champions looked nothing like champions.

Sven Mijnans did not sugarcoat it. "This is a wake-up call," the new signing from AZ said, adding that the squad now knows exactly what needs to be sharper heading into the league opener against Fortuna Sittard on Saturday (11).

Filip Kostic has emerged as a target for AEK Athens, but PSV remain cautiously confident both Kostic and Kodai Sano will still arrive (4) (7). Both parties are reportedly willing to compromise to make the deals happen (7).
