PSV rout Groningen 5–1 as Van Bommel announces himself

Five goals, one message

PSV thrashed FC Groningen 5–1 at home and did it after going a goal down (1) (5). The co-leaders arrived in Eindhoven unbeaten and left with the week's defining lesson: this PSV attack is not a slow build, it is a flood. Two games, nine goals, one draw and one win (1) (2). Ruben van Bommel did not just play well, he tore the right side of Groningen apart. Analyst Arnold Bruggink put it plainly: "Van Bommel has speed and power... super explosive. He just has a lot" (24) (26).

This was the performance the table has been waiting for. After the 2–2 stumble against Fortuna and the scrappy 2–1 win at Excelsior, PSV stopped being a team finding its feet and looked like a side that can bury opponents.

Van Bommel is the story now

The numbers are loud enough on their own, but watch the context. Groningen right-back Jorg Schreuders got played off the pitch so badly that the reports afterward were blunt about it: he is a new signing and Van Bommel made him a plaything all afternoon (21). Schreuders himself was realistic: "It goes with ups and downs, today was clearly a down" (18).

There is the real signal here. The debate over whether Van Bommel should have seen red for one hard challenge is exactly the kind of edge this team has been missing (29). He is 21, he is explosive, and defenders are now scared of him. That changes how opponents line up against PSV before a ball is kicked. Pepi and Dest added goals too, and the goals came from everywhere (3). The attack no longer depends on one creator.

The squad is deeper than it looks

Two debutants, and not quietly. Lutsharel Geertruida came on as a substitute to warm applause, with Peter Bosz saying he is already conditionally ready to start (10) (22). Ismael Saibari, gone to Bayern for €55m, took his official farewell in front of the fans before kickoff, an emotional moment that closes one chapter cleanly (15) (16).

Bosz also had to answer for something uglier: hate reactions toward Geertruida. He did not mince words. "Those people are not worth it" (27). New signing defended, debut delivered, and a winger back in town: Couhaib Driouech returned to Eindhoven after his Rangers loan collapsed over a medical dispute (30). Quietly, PSV's depth is getting interesting.

What to watch

FC Utrecht away on Sunday, then the big one on September 5: Ajax in Amsterdam (RECENT RESULTS, UPCOMING FIXTURES). Utrecht first, and PSV have not won there since before the summer. Geertruida may start now, and if Van Bommel carries this form into the Johan Cruijff ArenA a week later, that derby stops being about survival and becomes about statement. Two wins and this team goes top-four hunting. That is the benchmark now.
