PSV's defensive collapse against Villarreal sets off alarm bells

The alarm bells are ringing, and they are ringing loudly

PSV lost 1–3 to Villarreal on Saturday in what was supposed to be the final dress rehearsal before the Johan Cruijff Schaal (3)(4). It was not a dress rehearsal. It was a warning shot. Peter Bosz did not bother with diplomatic language: "You can be very happy with that scoreline" (15). A coach who has won three league titles in a row does not say that lightly. He said he had never seen his team give away so many chances in one half (12). That is not frustration. That is shock.

The defence is not ready, and Bosz knows it

The back line was porous from the first whistle. Matej Kovár's error for Villarreal's second goal was the kind of mistake that kills you in a competitive match (4)(28). Bosz defended him publicly, calling it "a shame he does himself short like that" (13)(21), but the damage was done. One PSV fan account called the performance "fumbling around like a youth player" (18). Harsh, but not unfair.

The one positive came from academy defender Amir Bouhamdi, who fans singled out as a genuine bright spot (19)(20). That a youth player is the headline takeaway from your final pre-season test tells you everything. Bosz said it plainly after the match: "A few defenders still need to come in" (10)(22). The club is actively looking. They have two weeks before the Eredivisie opener against Fortuna Sittard. The clock is ticking.

Mijnans chose the project, now the project needs him

Sven Mijnans spoke this week about his move from AZ, and his reasoning was clear: Champions League football, attacking football, and Peter Bosz (7)(9). He said he chose the trainer as much as the club. That is well and good, but Bosz fired a warning shot of his own: "We did not bring Sven Mijnans here for this" (1). The new midfielder now knows the standard. No one is getting a grace period.

Veerman wants the sun, Schouten feels the pain

Joey Veerman told De Telegraaf that Italy or Spain is "the ideal picture" for his next move, though he insists he is not "in prison" at PSV (5)(26). He also acknowledged that his injured midfield partner Jerdy Schouten faces "a tough time ahead" (8). Read between the lines: a midfield that was the engine of three straight titles could look very different by September. One man has his eyes on the exit. The other cannot get on the pitch.

Mauro gets it, at least

Mauro Júnior backed Bosz's message about mentality this week: "Arrogance must not rise above our mentality" (27). After three straight titles, that is exactly the right instinct. The question is whether enough of the squad feels it. Saturday suggested not.

What to watch

The Johan Cruijff Schaal is next. Ajax are loading up with experienced players and Bosz has already said he expects them to push harder this season (25). PSV have two weeks to sign defenders and find a shape that does not leak goals like a Europa League qualifier. The friendly was a wake-up call. Ignoring it would be negligence.
