Paraguay 0–0 Australia. That is all it took. The Socceroos are out of Group D and into the knockout rounds as runners-up behind the USA (1) (2) (3).

It was not pretty. The Guardian called it "nerve-shredding" and the stats back that up, low creativity, few chances, a match both sides knew they could not lose (5) (3). Marca went with the headline "Pacto de Santa Clara", and the name sticks (8).

But nobody in Australian camp will care how it looked. The mission was simple. Get the point. Advance. Done.

Group D ends with Turkey out

The USA topped the group. Turkey go home despite beating the Americans in the opener. Australia's two group-stage results, a win over Turkey, a loss to the USA, and this draw, were enough to finish second and book a last-32 place (6) (3).

Fan reactions

Socceroos supporters spent most of the match watching through their fingers. /r/soccer lit up in the 49th minute over a penalty shout that wasn't given, and Paraguayan keeper Gill kept the match scoreless with two big first-half saves that had fans holding their breath. On /r/worldcup one user called the Australia-Paraguay fixture "not that interesting" before kickoff, the final 20 minutes proved them wrong.
