Austria out and Rangnick warns the talent pool is running dry
Austria out, Rangnick sounds the alarm
Austria are out of the 2026 World Cup at the last 16 stage (1). The scoreline is unavailable, but the result is final.
Ralf Rangnick did not hide his worry after the match. His team fought hard through the group, but the bigger problem came out in his words: "If someone with Austrian ancestry doesn't turn up somewhere...", a blunt warning about a talent pipeline that is drying up (1).
The coach pointed to an ageing squad and a lack of emerging players coming through. One run to the knockouts does not fix that.
Spain took the lead from the spot
Spain went ahead against Austria from a penalty in Saturday's last-16 match in Los Angeles (2) (3). Spanish fans filled the streets ahead of kick-off, confident (3). Austria's defensive organisation was always going to be the test, and the penalty was the breakthrough Spain needed.
