Australia locked in as Belgium face New Zealand with everything on the line
Australia 0–0 Paraguay, and now they wait for you
This was the final piece. Australia drew 0–0 with Paraguay on Friday and finished second in their group (1) (8). If Belgium also finish second after the New Zealand match, you face Australia in the round of 32.
That is the clean path. Win the group, and the bracket opens differently, possibly avoiding France until later (4) (7).
But a draw against New Zealand is not enough to guarantee safety. Ecuador's win has pushed Belgium down to 10th among the third-placed teams, and only the top eight of those advance (15). Lose to New Zealand, and it is over, group-stage elimination (7).
Garcia: Doku probably does not start
Rudi Garcia has given a rare hint about his lineup. "Jeremy Doku start normaal gezien niet," the coach said, Doku is not expected to start against New Zealand (2) (5).
Doku has trained without problems since returning to camp (13). This looks like a tactical call, not a fitness one.
Onana could come in, Vanaken in the conversation
Coach Conings has suggested Amadou Onana might start, giving Garcia more physical presence in midfield (11). Analyst Hein Vanhaezebrouck has already pushed for Hans Vanaken to start as well.
The camp knows the Iran 0–0 and Egypt 1–1 were not good enough. Brandon Mechele called them a "wake-upcall" and said the team will show up against New Zealand (9).
New Zealand's coach is poking the bear
New Zealand manager has decided to apply some pressure of his own. "I think Belgium are under a bit of pressure," he said (10). Mind games, a few days out.
Bouckenooghe: 3–1 Belgium
Former New Zealand international Christian Bouckenooghe, who holds both nationalities, expects Belgium to win 3–1 (12). He cannot pick a side, "Ik kan niet kiezen", but his money is on your team.
Karl Vannieuwkerke also weighed in, confident Belgium advance (12).
The maths: win and you are through, draw and it gets complicated
A win against New Zealand puts Belgium safely into the round of 32, with Australia the likely opponent if the group is not won (7). A draw would leave Belgium on three points, sweating on the best-third-place race, currently outside the top eight (14) (15).
