Brazil face a law that could ban foreign-based players from the Seleção
A law that would ban foreign-based players from the Seleção
A bill being pushed in Brazil would bar any player at a foreign club from being called up to the national team (1). If it passes, Vinícius Júnior, Bruno Guimarães, and virtually the entire current squad become ineligible. Only domestic-based players could represent Brazil. The proposal lands days after the World Cup exit to Norway, adding political pressure to an already fragile moment for the CBF.
Exit confirmed: Norway 2–1, Haaland brace
Brazil are out in the round of 16 for the first time since 1990. Erling Haaland scored both goals in Norway's 2–1 win on Sunday (2) (3). An eight-quarter-final streak, running from 1994 to 2022, is over (3). Neymar said his goodbye on the pitch. Ancelotti stays, and Vinícius Júnior, who scored four times in the tournament, has already promised he will not give up.
Haaland rubbing it in with a Ronaldinho celebration
The man who knocked you out is now doing Ronaldinho's iconic celebration in training ahead of Norway's quarter-final against England on Saturday (4). Haaland also told the English press that all the pressure is on them: "They are the clear favourites" (5).
Vinícius Júnior: Madrid set a renewal ceiling
With the World Cup over, Real Madrid have moved to lock Vinícius Júnior down. The club has set a maximum limit on what they will offer in renewal talks (7). No agreement yet, and the number from Madrid's side is now public.
Bruno Guimarães wants Arsenal
The midfielder has told Newcastle to listen to Arsenal's offer (8). Arsenal have bid £70m, which Newcastle rejected (6). Lyon hold a 20% sell-on clause and would pocket a windfall from any deal.
Fan reactions
Brazilian supporters are finding dark humour in the numbers. One Reddit thread notes that every former World Cup winner is now falling at a different stage, Italy missed qualification, Uruguay went out in the group stage, Germany in the round of 32, and Brazil in the round of 16. Four former champions remain, each still able to exit at a different round. Read the thread
