Canada enter first World Cup knockout match against Morocco
Canada face Morocco in the last 16 Saturday
This is it. Canada play Morocco in their first World Cup knockout match ever, Saturday in the round of 16 (1) (2). Jesse Marsch has already called everything from here "a bonus" after Stephen Eustáquio's stoppage-time volley beat South Africa in the last round. Morocco are no mystery, they have been one of the sharper sides in the tournament and Dutch outlet VI labelled them clear favourites (3).
No score is in yet. The match kicks off at 18:00 UK time (2) (4).
Belgium release Canadian keeper Max Anchor mid-tournament
Max Anchor's World Cup is over. Belgium have parted ways with their fourth-choice goalkeeper, the 21-year-old Canadian, during the knockout stage (5). VI reports the Belgian camp did it with class, full squad gathering to say goodbye before Anchor left camp. He did not feature in a match.
Fan reactions
The match thread on r/MCFC is quiet for now, fans clocking the 18:00 kickoff and noting no City players involved in the Canada-Morocco tie. Over on r/worldcup, the mood is electric, one fan calling this knockout round "out of this world" after a run of dramatic finishes, Eustáquio's late winner among them. Full thread here.
