Blue Sharks return to Independence Day celebration, July 3 declared national day

Home as heroes on Independence Day

Your Blue Sharks are back on Cape Verdean soil and the nation did not hold back. Thousands lined the streets Sunday to welcome the squad home after their World Cup run ended with a 3–2 extra-time loss to Argentina in the round of 16 (1) (2) (3) (5). The timing could not be more fitting: it was Independence Day, and the celebration of the team and the nation merged into one massive party (1) (2) (4) (6) (8) (10).

Vozinha's words hit different

Goalkeeper Vozinha, one of the most celebrated figures upon return, gave a speech that cut through the noise. "Everything we do is for our people and for our homeland. Being here today is a moment of great satisfaction and pride," he said. Then he looked ahead: "I hope that in the future these children can see Cape Verde players as references and realize that, with work, they can achieve their dreams and be whatever they want, in any field" (5). Coach Bubista also drew huge cheers from the crowd (5).

July 3 is now officially Blue Sharks day

Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva decreed July 3 as an annual "Day of the Blue Sharks" to commemorate the Argentina match (6). The government is putting a permanent marker on what your team achieved in that knockout game.

26 million and a tattoo

Vozinha's World Cup did more than stop shots. The goalkeeper went from 50,000 Instagram followers before the tournament to 26 million by the end (9). And in Rio de Janeiro, a Brazilian fan got Vozinha's face tattooed on his arm. "The World Cup means a lot to us," the fan said (9).

Argentina 3–2 Cabo Verde: the match that started it all

Your team pushed the world champions to extra time on July 3 before falling 3–2. No shame in that exit. The performance earned the kind of respect that had thousands chanting in the streets two days later (5) (6) (7).

Fan reactions

The pride is off the charts. Reddit threads are flooded with celebration clips and love for the squad. One fan summed it up simply: "Thank you World for your love and support." Another pointed out that Cape Verde joined a shortlist of just a few nations who have reached the knockout stages without yet winning a knockout match, a testament to how far this team has come. See the welcome home
