Curaçao fall 7–1 to Germany in World Cup debut

Germany 7–1 Curaçao

Your team walked into a World Cup for the first time and came out the other side with a 7–1 loss to Germany in Houston on Sunday (1) (2) (3). That scoreline is brutal. But for 20 minutes, it was 1–1, and Curaçao had their moment on the biggest stage. Germany then scored six unanswered. Musiala, Wirtz, and Nmecha ran the show. Undav came off the bench and produced a goal and two assists in 24 minutes.

Havertz scored twice

Kai Havertz got two of Germany's seven on Sunday (13). The Arsenal forward was sharp from the start and gave Curaçao's backline problems all afternoon.

Rüdiger came off the bench

Antonio Rüdiger entered as a substitute, the only Real Madrid player to win his World Cup match so far (16). Germany did not need him from the start, but his presence steadied things after Curaçao's equalizer.

Nagelsmann praised his defenders after the equalizer

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann singled out Waldemar Anton and Antonio Rüdiger for how they handled Nico Schlotterbeck after Curaçao made it 1–1. "The way they pushed Nico Schlotterbeck after the goal was crucial. That's the spirit. Even though he's their competitor. That's the key," Nagelsmann said (8). Rüdiger and Anton apparently rallied Schlotterbeck immediately, and Germany never looked back.

FIFA clears VAR official Shaun Evans

FIFA found "no evidence" that VAR assistant Shaun Evans intentionally made a racist hand gesture before the Germany-Curaçao match on Sunday (5) (6) (12). Evans released a statement: "I would like to clarify that I did not intentionally make a hand gesture or symbol to communicate a message, affiliation, game, or belief of any kind" (10) (11). Several outlets had reported the gesture resembled a white power sign. The investigation is closed.

Germany can advance Saturday

After beating Curaçao 7–1, Germany could book their spot in the round of 16 as early as Saturday, depending on how other Group E results play out (15).

Fan-reaktioner

The mood online is a mix of pride and realism. One Reddit user pointed out that Curaçao, population 158,000, now ranks third all-time in World Cup goals per capita and first per appearance (3). Another thread highlighted how Curaçao's goalkeeper kept the score from getting even worse, part of a broader discussion about strong goalkeeping across the tournament so far. Read more on Reddit
