Room's 15 saves earn Curaçao first ever World Cup point

Your first World Cup point. Historic.

Curaçao 0–0 Ecuador on Sunday night, and that single point rewrites everything (2) (3) (6). This was not a smash-and-grab. Ecuador threw everything at your team, 15 shots on target, and Eloy Room saved all 15 of them (2) (6). Man of the match, and nobody debates it.

Patrick van Aanholt singled out Sherel Floranus after the match: "Erg sterk", really strong (2). Dick Advocaat, the 78-year-old who could be retired somewhere quiet, was in tears on the touchline (6).

Eloy Room, 15 saves, and a statue fund

Fans on Curaçao are not waiting. A crowdfunding campaign has already started to build a statue for Room after that performance (7). The joke came from Room himself, and supporters decided the joke should be real.

Jayden, a fan quoted by Voetbalzone, put it plainly: "He played not just for himself. He played for the whole island, for everyone who believes in Curaçao, and for everyone who is no longer here" (7).

Ex-FIFA referee Keith Hackett agrees. "The saves were incredible. I like the comment from one of the broadcasters who said they're going to put a statue up to this guy" (6).

The penalty that wasn't

Sherel Floranus was at the centre of the only moment that could have stolen the point. An Ecuador player went down in the box, pressing for a penalty, but referee Ning Ma waved it off (6).

Hackett broke it down: "He cleverly puts the brakes on and starts to go down. So for me, it's not a penalty kick. The referee has judged it correctly" (6). He called it simulation, a dive, plain and simple.

Advocaat lets families into the team hotel

Advocaat has opened the doors. Curaçao players are allowed to share their rooms with their families during the World Cup, a policy RMCSport calls unusual at this level (5). The veteran coach clearly trusts his squad to handle it.

Hackett: Advocaat deserves a statue too

"This is a guy who could have his feet up retired," Hackett said. "He's taking that job on to help promote football on the world stage" (6). Another statue fund might need to start.

Is this the first and last World Cup for Curaçao?

Not everyone is celebrating without reservation. A Dutch podcast has raised the question of whether this debut World Cup appearance will also be Curaçao's last (4). The expanded 48-team format opened the door, will it stay open? That debate is already running.

Around the tournament: New Zealand 1–3 Egypt

In the other Group E action, Egypt beat New Zealand 1–3 to strengthen their position (1). Your team's point puts pressure on the group, Curaçao are not just here to participate.

Fan reactions

The island is emotional. Fans are calling Room's 15-save performance one of the greatest individual displays in Curaçao sporting history, and the statue campaign is gaining real traction. Join the discussion on Reddit.
