England top Group L as DR Congo last-32 clash is set
England labour past Panama to top Group L
England 2–0 Panama on Saturday. Job done, top of Group L, but nobody is printing the T-shirts yet (1) (2).
Jude Bellingham bent the game to his will with a goal and an assist, becoming the youngest England player since 1966 to do both in a World Cup match (2) (7) (9). Marcus Rashford got the second.
Harry Kane was quiet from open play, but a first-half penalty made him England's all-time leading World Cup scorer with 12 (2) (8). Panama sat deep and made it a grind. Your team found a way through. That is what mattered.
DR Congo await in the last 32
The opposition is confirmed. DR Congo came from behind to beat Uzbekistan 3–1, with Yoane Wissa scoring twice (6) (13) (17). The Leopards are into the last 32 and will face England on Wednesday, live on BBC One (5). This is new ground, England have never faced DR Congo at senior level.
Bellingham: first job done, Kane is the GOAT
Jude Bellingham kept it simple after the match: "The first job achieved. We came here to do it in sections, and now we've achieved that first objective: to get through the group and to top it as well" (2).
He also had something bigger to say about Harry Kane, calling him "the best England player of all time" (16).
Defensive worries and a Quansah injury
It is not all smooth. Jarrell Quansah went off injured, and the backline looked shaky again (4) (10). Jacob Steinberg called it a "creaky defence" and argued England need Declan Rice back firing (4). BBC pundits were blunt, England will not win this World Cup unless they improve (14). The group stage is over. The real tournament starts now.
Anderson's £116m City move could land before Wednesday
Elliot Anderson is closing in on a £116m move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City. Thomas Tuchel has said there is a "high chance" it happens before England's last-32 match (3). A huge fee and a huge stage for a midfielder still in camp.
