Rice set to play through pain as England-Mexico kick-off chaos ends

The 1am kick-off stays, after five hours of chaos

England vs Mexico kicks off at 1am UK time on Sunday night. That was confirmed late Friday after FIFA performed a full U-turn, having earlier told both camps the game would move forward due to a storm warning (1) (2) (4). Mexico manager Javier Aguirre did not hide his anger: "It's a kick in the stomach. This changes everything. They informed me about it here, I don't agree, FIFA calls the shots and we have to swallow garlic and water" (12). Gary Neville and Thomas Tuchel also slammed the handling of it (12). The BBC called it five and a half hours that left your last-16 tie in chaos (3).

Rice will play through the pain

Declan Rice is expected to be available to start against Mexico despite an ongoing neural issue affecting his lower back and hamstring (8). He played 15 minutes at right-back in the last game and Paul Merson was impressed: "He was outstanding," but warned that Mexico will isolate him in one-v-ones and that changes the equation (9). With Reece James and Jarell Quansah injured, right-back is a real problem spot and Rice may have to fill in again (9).

Pickford keeps his shirt, Agbonlahor says

Gabby Agbonlahor does not see Thomas Tuchel dropping Jordan Pickford for James Trafford. "No. No, there's not a good enough backup, I don't think," he said (10). Pickford has spoken recently about renewed belief in the camp under Tuchel, so the shirt looks his for Monday.

Rogers: 'We'll be ready'

Morgan Rogers had the shortest and calmest reaction to the kick-off saga. "We'll be ready regardless of the time," he said (6). That is the line from inside the camp. No panic.

The road to the final is a long one

FourFourTwo mapped out England's potential travel if they go all the way (7). It is a serious amount of air miles across the USA and Mexico. Dan Burn and Harry Kane will rack up the most, and the squad will have to manage recovery between legs, starting with Mexico, then a quarter-final path that could run through Croatia, Ghana or Costa Rica (7).

Fan reactions

The mood on Reddit is split between relief that the kick-off time has been locked in and frustration at how FIFA handled it. One fan called it a shambles on r/soccer, while Arsenal supporters on r/Gunners are worried about Rice playing through a nerve issue with such a short turnaround. Meanwhile, a separate post flagged that England youth international Heaven Kilwa is set to join Manchester City from Aston Villa, a move that has nothing to do with Sunday but everything to do with the pipeline.
