Klopp agrees Germany deal, U19s fall to Spain

The deal that changes everything

Jürgen Klopp sat down with the DFB in New York on Saturday and agreed on the key points of a contract to become Germany's next head coach (1) (7). Only one obstacle remains: an agreement with his current employer, Red Bull. The DFB statement called the talks constructive and said both sides are confident of reaching a conclusion (1). This is happening.

It is hard to overstate what Klopp means here. Germany exited the 2026 World Cup without reaching the quarter-finals. The Nagelsmann cycle sputtered out. The team has been drifting, and the federation knows it. Klopp is not just a name. He is a signal that the drift is over.

The contrast with this week's other Germany news is stark. While the DFB was flying to New York to woo Klopp, the federation was also denying reports of post-World Cup tensions involving Manuel Neuer (4). Assistant coach Andreas Kronenberg reportedly wanted to resign after the tournament (10) (16). Matthäus piled on, saying Neuer should have skipped the World Cup entirely (3). The old guard is not exiting quietly.

The U19s showed the pipeline, then Spain showed the gap

Germany U19 reached the European Championship final with real momentum. They beat Ukraine 2–1 in the semi-final, playing with the energy captain Francis Onyeka had described: a team full of will, desperate to win (8) (9) (13) (18).

Then Spain U19 beat them 2–0 (2) (5). Hugo López and Mario Rivas scored the goals. Spain were simply better. On the same weekend, Germany U19 women faced Spain in their own European final (9) (14). Two finals, one opponent, no trophy yet for the men.

Matthäus used the moment to call for exactly this: the new coach, whether Klopp or someone else, must put young talents at the centre of the project (7) (19). The pipeline is producing. The U19 runs prove that. What it lacks is a bridge to the senior side.

What Klopp inherits

The tactical analysis already circulating suggests Klopp's football can fit this German squad (6) (10). The pressing, the transitions, the emotional intensity. These are not foreign concepts to a group that grew up watching his Dortmund and Liverpool sides dominate. The question is whether the current senior players can execute it.

Matthäus named names this week. He wants fresh faces, not the same cycle of veterans who have now failed at consecutive tournaments (7) (19). Klopp's arrival makes that conversation real. He has never been a manager who indulges reputations. If Neuer's World Cup return was a mistake, as Matthäus argues (3), Klopp will not repeat it out of sentiment.

The DFB's statement said talks continue this coming week (1). There is no ambiguity left. The federation wants Klopp. Klopp wants the job. Red Bull is the final door.

What to watch

The contract. Everything else is noise. If the Red Bull agreement comes through this week, Klopp will be presented as Germany's new head coach before July ends. Then the real work starts. The first squad selection under Klopp, whenever it comes, will tell us more about this team's direction than any post-World Cup inquest. Matthäus has already drawn the battle lines. Klopp does not do caution. The transition is coming, and it will not be gentle.
