Austria and Algeria's 3–3 draw eliminates Iran from the World Cup
Austria and Algeria's 3–3 draw sends Iran out
It is over. Austria 3–3 Algeria on Saturday night, and that result eliminates your team from the World Cup (1) (2) (3). Iran needed one of those two to lose. Neither did. Austria's Saša Kalajdžić scored a stoppage-time equaliser that sealed it, the goal that ended your tournament (3) (4). Iran exit the group stage with two points from two draws, the best third-place record that still was not enough (7).
Kalajdžić on the goal that knocked Iran out
The Austrian striker could barely describe it. "I almost ended up outside the stadium because everyone pushed me forward in pure ecstasy," Kalajdžić said after his equaliser (3). That push sent Austria through and Iran home.
Taremi: 'USA and FIFA want us eliminated'
Captain Mehdi Taremi did not hold back after the elimination was confirmed. "We play for peace, but there is nothing peaceful about how we are treated in this tournament," Taremi said, claiming both the United States and FIFA wanted Iran out (8). The anger stems partly from a disallowed goal in the 1–1 draw with Egypt, a decision Taremi believes was no accident.
