Dumfries injury worry looms over Netherlands ahead of Japan

Dumfries injury would be a disaster

That's the verdict from journalist Valentijn Driessen ahead of the World Cup opener against Japan. Denzel Dumfries has been a fixture on the right but has cycled through nine different partners on that flank already, his absence would rip up whatever chemistry Koeman has managed to build. The starting eleven against Uzbekistan will "almost certainly" be the side that faces Japan, so the Uzbekistan warm-up just became a stress test for Dumfries' fitness. (1)

Verbruggen concern ahead of Japan

Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen is training individually, raising a worry just days before the tournament begins. On the brighter side, a podcast report mentions there is finally some good news around the squad, though details are thin. Japan, meanwhile, have lost midfielder Wataru Endo to injury, a boost for Oranje's midfield battle. (1) (4)

El Ghazi: start Brobbey, bench Depay and Gakpo

Former international Anwar El Ghazi has thrown a curveball into the pre-tournament discussion. He wants Brian Brobbey to start up front "to protect" Memphis Depay, and says Cody Gakpo and Depay should not both be in the lineup. Instead, El Ghazi suggests Koeman look at Brobbey as a potential tournament revelation. (2) (3)

Koeman to call Henrik Larsson about Sweden

Ronald Koeman is planning ahead. Sweden are a potential opponent later in the tournament and Koeman wants intel from his friend Henrik Larsson. "Better to call him," Koeman said, though he stressed the focus remains squarely on Japan first. (6)

Weghorst shines at training, in footvolley

Wout Weghorst turned heads during an open Oranje training session by dominating a footvolley game. Journalist Mike Verweij noted this is no fluke: "That story was already going around at Ajax." Weghorst's team won the session, a small morale boost during camp. (7)

Ruud van Nistelrooij under fire for late arrival

Assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooij joined the squad late after celebrating his 50th birthday, and pundit Anco Jansen is not having it. "A bad signal, truly absurd," Jansen said, arguing that missing part of World Cup preparation for a party undermines the seriousness of the campaign. (10)

Ronald Koeman junior eyes Eredivisie top club

The goalkeeper, son of the national team boss, is available on a free transfer from Telstar and wants a move within the Netherlands. He is open to a backup role at a club like FC Utrecht or FC Twente. "Ideally I'd make a nice step somewhere in the Netherlands," he said. (9)

World Cup opens: Mexico 2–0 South Africa

The tournament kicked off with Mexico beating South Africa 2–0 in front of a raucous home crowd in Kansas City. South Africa finished with two red cards, mirroring Oranje's own disciplinary headaches from past tournaments. (8) (11)
