Paraguay stun Germany on penalties and the country gets a holiday

Germany 1–1 Paraguay (3–4 pens), you are in the last 16

Your team did it. Paraguay knocked Germany out of the World Cup on Monday night, winning 4–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in the round of 32 (1) (4) (8). Germany scored first through a Jonathan Tah header, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review, a controversial call that dominated German reaction afterwards (3). The match went to penalties and Paraguay held their nerve. Nick Woltemade missed the decisive spot-kick for Germany, and your team erupted (8). Cody Gakpo did not feature in this match, nor did Romelu Lukaku or Kai Havertz, early tournament exits elsewhere mean this stage belonged to Paraguay alone (5) (7).

A national holiday, declared overnight

Paraguayan president Santiago Peña declared Tuesday a national holiday. Offices are closed. The country is celebrating (14) (18) (19). Le Parisien captured the mood best: "Jour férié bordel !", which translates roughly to "Public holiday, damn right!" (18). The decision came within hours of the final whistle.

Alfaro: resistance is in our identity

Gustavo Alfaro did not mince words after the match. "Direnmek bizim kimliğimize işlenmiştir," he said, "Resistance is ingrained in our identity" (2). The Paraguay manager has built a side that bends but refuses to break, and the Germany result is the proof.

Kimmich: we messed it up again

Germany captain Joshua Kimmich fronted up after the loss. "Yine işi berbat ettik," he said, "We messed it up again" (12). He added that the team should not look for blame elsewhere. The German press was merciless: "Flop Germania" ran in one outlet (6). International papers called it a seismic shock, "Was ein Erdbeben," wrote one, comparing it to an earthquake (6).

Nagelsmann under pressure, Klopp stays quiet

Julian Nagelsmann is feeling the heat. Former Germany defender Per Mertesacker criticised a past statement from the coach in the wake of the Paraguay result (11). Jürgen Klopp, asked about Nagelsmann's future, did not condemn him, but also did not offer a full-throated defence (16) (17). The silence was loud.
