Portugal enter the Jorge Jesus era with Ronaldo question settled

The new era starts here

Four days. That is how long it took the Portuguese Football Federation to move from the rubble of a round-of-16 exit to naming Jorge Jesus as the man to lead Portugal through Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup on home soil (4) (9). Roberto Martinez said his goodbye the moment Mikel Merino's stoppage-time goal sent Spain through 1–0 in Dallas, and the FPF did not wait around for the dust to settle (9) (10).

Jesus signed a four-year contract on Friday. FPF president Pedro Proença greeted him with the kind of ambition Portugal fans have been waiting to hear from the top. "Portugal wants to be the best national team in the world," he said (12). Not a top-eight nation. Not a regular quarter-finalist. The best.

That language matters after a World Cup campaign that ended with Bruno Fernandes describing himself as "sad, frustrated, and disappointed" (11) (13). Portugal beat Croatia 2–1 in the round of 32, but the Spain defeat exposed the same old shortcomings: no attacking spark, no plan B when the game got tight (10) (15). Martinez never found a way to make this talent pool hum. Jesus now gets that chance.

The Ronaldo conversation is already settled

Jesus addressed it before anyone could ask. "I haven't spoken to Cristiano yet. He will never be a problem for the national team, or for me" (5). The 41-year-old finished his final World Cup with three goals, taking his tournament tally to 11 and making him Portugal's all-time top scorer on the biggest stage (14). He also extended his Al Nassr contract through June 2027, so the club career rolls on (17).

Jesus knows the player intimately from their time together in Saudi Arabia, where he also worked with João Félix (19). The new coach's stance is pragmatic: if the physical conditions are right, Ronaldo gets called up. If not, not. He pointed to his handling of Neymar as proof he does not get starstruck. "I told Neymar one day: you, finished" (8). The quote is brutal and deliberate. Jesus wants everyone to know the hierarchy has changed.

Whether Ronaldo accepts a reduced role is a different question. What is clear is that the federation is already building the post-playing chapter. Marketing director João Medeiros Cardoso confirmed Ronaldo will have "an important role, without a doubt" as an ambassador for the 2030 World Cup (6) (13). The Lendas de Portugal project is being relaunched specifically to position him as the face of the tournament off the pitch. The transition is being managed on both fronts.

A coach who will fight

This is not a continuity appointment. Martinez was a diplomat. Jesus is 71, loud, and allergic to passive football. The contrast is exactly what Proença wanted. The Spain defeat was a team without sharp edges. Jesus brings the opposite profile: high-tempo, attacking football, and a personality that fills a room.

The coaching staff is already assembled (7). The contract runs through two major tournaments, including a World Cup Portugal will co-host. The mandate is unambiguous. Jesus does not need to be liked. He needs to make Portugal hard to beat.

What to watch

The first squad announcement. Jesus has said all the right things about Ronaldo in public, but the real signal comes when he names his first selection. A call-up for the Nations League or early Euro 2028 qualifiers will tell us whether the "conditions are right" line was diplomacy or genuine intent. The bigger question is which of the younger forwards, Gonçalo Ramos and Félix chief among them, Jesus builds around. He knows Félix from Al Nassr. That relationship could shape the attack more than anything he says about Ronaldo.
