Portugal stumble into Croatia clash with zero goals and one defining question

Colombia 0–0, and now the reckoning begins

Second place in Group K. Three matches, three draws, zero goals from open play. Portugal are through to the round of 32 anyway, because the 48-team format forgives almost everything, but the path ahead is unforgiving. Croatia on Friday. Then, if the bracket holds, Spain. Then France (1). This is not a group-stage wobble you can grow out of. This is a team sleepwalking toward a wall.

Roberto Martinez saw something different. Cristiano Ronaldo is an "absolute starter" with no physical or mental limitation preventing him from playing 90 minutes (7). Comparing him to other forwards is "childish" and "unprofessional" (18). The data, Martinez says, supports every decision. Vítor Almeida Gonçalves, a Portuguese commentator, put it bluntly: Martinez "is talking about a match only he saw" (9). The foreign press was less diplomatic. "It can hardly be worse," ran one assessment (13).

That gap between what the coach perceives and what the rest of the world watches is now the defining tension of Portugal's tournament.

The tactical reality is uglier than the rhetoric

Portugal have the best midfield at this World Cup. João Neves, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes. They have Rafael Leão on the left, Francisco Conceição on the right. Rúben Dias returns to the backline for the Croatia match after injury. On paper, this squad should overwhelm opponents.

On grass, they have not scored from open play in 270 minutes of group-stage football. Colombia 0–0 (3). Uzbekistan 0–0. DR Congo 0–0. Three clean sheets for the opposition, none of them giants.

The Ronaldo debate is not about respect. James Rodríguez, his former Real Madrid teammate, called him "a great athlete" and marvelled at his body at 41 (12). The reverence is genuine. But the Dutch press is asking harder questions, contrasting his fading impact with Lionel Messi's continued influence for Argentina (10). A fan poll in A Bola calls for him to be dropped (7). Martinez has substituted him exactly zero times in this tournament.

Quaresma named the real problem

Ricardo Quaresma, who wore the Portuguese shirt with precisely the edge this team is missing, said the players looked "tired and unmotivated" and lacked "the arrogance we always had" (11). Arrogance, in Quaresma's meaning, is not vanity. It is the belief that you are better than the opponent and the refusal to let 90 minutes pass without proving it.

This Portugal side has talent that Quaresma's generation could only envy. What it lacks, right now, is conviction. A team with Dias, Neves, Leão, and Fernandes should not need three draws to escape a group containing DR Congo and Uzbekistan.

Friday is about more than football

Portugal face Croatia in the round of 32 on July 3 (2). The date carries weight nobody in the squad will ignore: one year since Diogo Jota died, and Martinez has spoken about winning this World Cup for him (17). Ronaldo versus Modric, two 40-year-olds, one of them going home.

The emotional stakes are clear. The tactical stakes are clearer. Martinez either adjusts, or he bets everything on the same formula that produced three scoreless draws. Croatia are not Colombia. They will punish passivity. Portugal have the better squad, the deeper bench, and every reason to impose themselves. They have had all of that for three matches now without it once showing up on the scoreboard.
