Senegal fall 3–1 to France as Olise draws Zidane comparisons

France 3–1 in the opener, and the gap was real

Your team lost their World Cup opener to the reigning champions on Tuesday. France 3–1 Senegal at MetLife Stadium, and the scoreline did not flatter the French (2) (3).

Michael Olise ran the show. Kylian Mbappé became France's all-time top scorer. Senegal had moments, but not enough of them.

Vieira puts Olise in the Zidane bracket

Patrick Vieira did not hold back after the match. "We had Michel Platini, we had Zinedine Zidane, now we have Michael Olise. He will be a future Ballon d'Or winner," the former France midfielder said (2).

Olise was the best player on the pitch. That is the level your team faced.

Mbappé breaks the record, shrugs it off

Mbappé is now France's top scorer of all time. His reaction was understated. "I'm not here to achieve individual records," he said after the match (3).

He also praised his link-up with Olise. The chemistry is there, and Senegal felt it.

That Senegal goal: was Maignan at fault?

French analysts are asking the question. RMCSport examined whether goalkeeper Mike Maignan should have done better on Senegal's goal (1).

No definitive answer. But the fact the debate exists tells you the goal came from pressure, not just luck.
