South Africa fall 2–0 to Mexico in World Cup opener
Nightmare start in Mexico City
South Africa's World Cup campaign opened with a flat 2–0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. Bafana Bafana never looked in control, and former captain Dean Furman did not hold back: "miles off it" (1).
Sixteen years to the day since Tshabalala's iconic strike against the same opponent in 2010, this was a sobering return. Mexico dictated the tempo, and South Africa offered little going forward.
The loss puts immediate pressure on Javier Aguirre's side. With the closed-door preparation now over, questions will follow about whether the team was ready for this stage at all (2) (3).
What comes next
South Africa must regroup fast. Two group-stage matches remain, and a response is non-negotiable if Bafana Bafana want to avoid an early exit from their own co-hosted tournament. Details of the next fixture will be confirmed shortly.
