Spain ready for Cape Verde World Cup opener
World Cup opener Sunday
Spain kick off their 2026 World Cup campaign against Cape Verde on Sunday, 15 June. It's Group H and it's the moment everything has been building toward (1). The final warm-up is in the books. Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams were held out of the Peru friendly to protect their fitness, and the medical staff expect both to be ready for the opener (1). Rodri and Mikel Oyarzabal are also expected to feature.
Jordanian referee in charge
Adham Makhadmeh of Jordan will be the referee for the Spain–Cape Verde match (2). The 39-year-old has been a FIFA-listed official since 2013. It's his second World Cup after working the 2022 tournament.
Cucurella's tattoo promise
Marc Cucurella says he will get a tattoo if Spain win the World Cup, but he is not revealing what it would be (3). He called it a personal bet and has kept the design secret. The defender has become a key figure in the squad and clearly believes something special is possible.
Porro shuts down City talk
Pedro Porro has brushed off reports linking him with a move to Manchester City, insisting his full focus is on Spain's World Cup campaign (4). The Tottenham right-back described the speculation as unimportant and said nothing will distract him from the tournament.
Inside Spain's World Cup base
Spain are staying at a luxury hotel complex that includes a state-of-the-art gym, spa facilities, and multiple training pitches (6). The federation chose the site to give the squad everything they need on site, privacy, recovery, and intense preparation without outside distractions.
