Sweden humbled 5–1 as Netherlands run riot in Group F

Sweden thrashed 5–1 by Netherlands

That one hurt. Sweden were dismantled 5–1 by the Netherlands in their second World Cup Group F match on Saturday (1) (2) (3). The Dutch ran riot, with Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey among the scorers, while Crysencio Summerville added the fifth in the 89th minute (14). Sweden's path to the round of 16 just got very complicated.

Potter: 'You can't concede that many and hope to win'

Graham Potter did not sugarcoat it. "Obviously, really disappointed," he said after the match. "It was a tricky one to analyse, we did lots of good things. We attacked, had good opportunities, but you can't concede that many and hope to win. We'll learn a lot from the game" (5). He pointed to the attacking moments Sweden created, but the defensive collapse made them irrelevant.

Fans demand switch to back four

The calls came fast after the final whistle. Pundits and supporters want Sweden to abandon the back three and switch to a four-man defence (1). Potter addressed the noise: "Everyone thinks there is a tactical solution," he said, pushing back against the idea that one formation change fixes everything (1).

Dutch media pile on

The Dutch press did not hold back. De Telegraaf called Sweden "a sinking ship" (6). French pundit Riolo labelled it "une raclée sévère", a severe thrashing (11). The Netherlands also set a record with their 14th straight World Cup match without defeat, a run stretching back to 2010 (14).

Referee under scrutiny after Gyokeres moment

Michael Oliver had a difficult night. The referee made three notable mistakes in the match, including one involving Viktor Gyokeres that left Swedish fans frustrated (2). The VAR chip-in-ball technology that helped Isak earlier in the tournament offered no rescue this time.

Fan reactions

Swedish supporters online are in a grim mood. The match thread on r/soccer was dominated by Dutch fans celebrating, while Sweden supporters dissected the defensive collapse with a mix of anger and dark humour. The Summerville goal thread captured the resignation, another goal conceded, another record for the Dutch.
