Sweden's World Cup ends with a reality check
Sweden out, no hiding from it
Your World Cup is over. France 3–0 Sweden in the round of 32, and it was not close. A French front four overran the defence, and Sweden did what they could just to cope. Former U21 coach Håkan Ericson called it a "reality check," pointing to a team that has lost the defensive identity it once had.
The company you kept
Sweden are one of six UEFA nations knocked out at the round of 32, alongside Germany and the Netherlands. No shame in the names on that list, but Ericson's point stands: defensive steel used to be Sweden's thing. It was not in this tournament.
Gyokeres heads home
Viktor Gyokeres was among the first wave of players heading back from the World Cup. No injury news, just the hard stop that comes with elimination.
Fan reactions
The conversation on Reddit puts the exits in cold perspective. Portugal are the only UEFA side gone after the round of 16, but Sweden's name sits in the earlier bracket alongside three CONMEBOL sides and three CONCACAF heavyweights. That round-of-32 company, Germany and the Netherlands included, is not what anyone pictured before the tournament. See the full confederation breakdown.
