Valenzuela to referee Türkiye's World Cup opener against Australia

Referee named for Australia opener

Jesus Valenzuela of Venezuela will officiate Türkiye's World Cup Group D opener against Australia. The appointment was confirmed on Wednesday, four days before kickoff on Saturday, June 14 (1).

It's a familiar face for the squad – Valenzuela handled Türkiye's 2–1 friendly win over Venezuela earlier in the buildup.

Heavy travel schedule in Group D

Türkiye will rack up 7,200 km of travel during the group stage, the most of any team in Group D and the ninth-highest total in the entire tournament (2).

That kind of mileage matters – fatigue and recovery windows tighten fast when you're bouncing between host cities while other sides stay put.

Preparations ramping up

Training continued Wednesday ahead of Saturday's World Cup opener against Australia. No injury concerns have surfaced publicly, and the mood around camp is focused (3).

Altay Bayindir, set for his first World Cup appearance, has been open about his ambition to help the team chase a lifelong dream at this tournament.
